The COVID Project is a reference site. It is read, not logged into. It sets no cookies of its own, runs no analytics, carries no third-party advertising or tracking, and sells no data. The one outside party it names is the law firm on its attorney referral page, and it passes a visitor's details there only when the visitor asks. The only information you give it is what you type into the contact form or the attorney referral form, and the only information it records on its own is the ordinary server log every web server keeps.
What this policy covers
This policy covers covidproject.com and its pages, tools and JSON API. It does not cover the sites you reach by following a source link, an archived copy or a legal authority to its home; those sites keep their own policies.
Server logs
Like every web server, the server that hosts this site writes a log line for each request: the address of the connection that made it, the page or file requested, the time, the status returned, the browser's identifying string and the page that linked here, when the browser sends one. The site's own application log records the time it took to load the Library and any error a page raised; it never records the address of the checkout or the person who caused an error.
Logs are used to keep the site running, to find and fix faults, and to recognize abuse such as an automated flood of requests. They are kept for a limited time, read only for those purposes, and are not joined with any other information about you.
When you send a message through the contact page, the site stores what you typed (your name, your email address, your organization and State if you gave them, and the message) together with the time and the address of the connection the message came from. The record is written to a file on the server that is never served to the public. When the site is configured to do so, the same message is also sent by email to the people who maintain the Project.
The message is used to answer you where an answer is needed, to check and correct the record you wrote about, and for nothing else. Your email address is never published, never added to a list and never shared with anyone outside the Project. Messages are kept for as long as they are useful to the work they describe and are then deleted.
The form asks for no employer identification number, no tax return and no claim file. Please do not send them; a message that contains such material is deleted.
The attorney referral form
The attorney referral page is the one place on this site where information you give is passed to someone outside the Project, and it is passed only because you ask. When you send the form, the site stores what you typed (your name, your company or organization, your email address, your phone number, and, if you gave them, your State, where the matter stands, the quarters you claimed and your notes for the attorney) together with the time, the address of the connection the request came from, and the text of the authorization you ticked. The record is written to a file on the server that is never served to the public and, when the site is configured to do so, a copy is sent by email to the people who maintain the Project.
With your authorization, the Project passes those details to Civil Counsel Group LLP or to another experienced tax practitioner so that they can contact you about your matter. The firm or practitioner then holds your details under its own privacy practices, and any engagement is between you and them. The authorization text you ticked and the time you ticked it are kept with the record as the record of your consent. The Project uses the details for the introduction and for nothing else; it does not add your address to a list and does not share it with anyone other than the firm or practitioner you authorized.
You can withdraw the authorization at any time by writing through the contact form. The Project then deletes your request from its record and, where the details have already been passed along, asks the firm or practitioner to stop contacting you. The Project is not a law firm; nothing you send through the form is legal advice or creates an attorney-client relationship.
Cookies and analytics
The site sets no cookies of its own, uses no analytics service and runs no advertising or tracking script. If a page ever needs to remember a choice you made, it does so in your own browser and says so on that page. If analytics or other cookies are ever added, this page will say so first.
Third-party fonts
The site's typefaces (Newsreader, Inter and IBM Plex Mono) are loaded from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests the font files from Google's servers, and Google receives the ordinary information any web request carries: the address of your connection, the browser's identifying string and the page that made the request. The Project receives nothing from that request. Google's statement on what the Fonts service records describes its side.
Exhibits, sources and outside links
Every record page offers the exhibit file, which the Project serves itself, and links to the instrument's source on the issuing authority's site and, where recorded, to an archived copy at the Internet Archive. Following one of those links takes you to that site, which keeps its own logs under its own policy.
No sale of data
The Project sells nothing, including data. It does not sell, rent, trade or share information about visitors with anyone, except the details a visitor asks it to pass to an attorney through the referral form, and it does not build profiles of them.
Children
The site is written for businesses, accountants and lawyers. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices and questions
You can read every page of this site without giving it any information. If you have written through the contact form and want your message deleted, say so through the same form and it will be. If you have sent the attorney referral form and want the request deleted or the authorization withdrawn, say so through the contact form. Questions about this policy go to the contact page.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new text appears here with a new effective date. The site's terms say how its material may be used.
