Operative words

A physician or other person who attends to a case of communicable disease shall arrange for appropriate barrier precautions, treatment, or isolation if needed to prevent the spread of infection to other household members, patients, or the community.

Penalty

MCL 333.2261 (misdemeanor for violating a department rule); MCL 333.2262 civil fine

What it required

Required physicians and laboratories to report each case of a serious communicable disease and 'the unusual occurrence of any disease, infection, or condition' within 24 hours (R 325.173), required schools, child day care centers and camps to report within 24 hours (R 325.173(9)), required local health departments to investigate (R 325.174), and required any person attending a case to arrange barrier precautions or isolation, while authorizing the local health officer or the department to institute 'appropriate isolation or other barrier precautions... for a case or a suspected case of disease... as necessary to protect the public health' (R 325.175(1)).

Retrieval note

Rule 5(1), second sentence: 'Appropriate isolation or other barrier precautions may be instituted for a case or a suspected case of disease, infection, or other condition by the local health officer or the department as necessary to protect the public health.' The rules are the standing isolation-and-quarantine vehicle beneath the MDHHS and county isolation and quarantine orders (Exs. MI-081, MI-084) and beneath 2020 PA 238's exclusion of positive, symptomatic and exposed employees from the workplace (Ex. MI-057). The designation of COVID-19 as a reportable condition is not in the library and is not asserted here.
