Operative words
Any person informed by the department, a private physician, or hospital that he or she has or is suspected of having a communicable disease for which isolation is required, shall remain isolated in the manner prescribed by the department of health. Isolation shall include exclusion from school and workplace, and restriction from food handling and direct care occupations.
Penalty
misdemeanor for violation of Department rules (HRS §§ 325-14, 321-18); reporting of violations by health care providers
What it required
The Department states the standing rule that a person diagnosed with or suspected of having a communicable disease requiring isolation 'shall remain isolated,' that isolation 'shall include exclusion from... workplace,' and that every health care provider 'shall report immediately to the department any violation of such isolation directive.' Character as recorded: agency_position_statement (release, FAQ, memorandum or statement; sanitary_code_duty layer).
Retrieval noteThe page is the Department's own publication of the isolation rule and is graded on that basis; it is undated and was rendered live on Sept. 28, 2026, so cite it as the Department's standing statement of Haw. Admin. R. ch. 11-156 rather than as a dated instrument of the period. The rendered PDF's text layer interleaves the page's sidebar with the body; the operative sentences read cleanly in the rendered image. During the period the Department applied the same authority to COVID-19 isolation and to the quarantine of close contacts (Ex. HI-052; recital in Ex. HI-024 at 6). the codified rule is not saved; grade reduced to verified_secondary.
